There is definitely a danger in the counter-cultural potential of psychedelics being suppressed if they're legalized in current conditions. I think decriminalization is a good first step to prevent punishing users and corporate interests from co-opting the drug from small producers. We have a long way to go before we can have psychedelics freely available. Perhaps there is a middle ground by authorizing therapeutic use?
Decriminalized for recreational use and legal for therapeutic use seems like the optimal path to me too. I also share your concern about commercialization. If psychedelics are sold freely without context or education, people may stop taking them seriously -- and a lot of their potential could be lost or distorted.
Maybe the challenge is to create cultural pockets outside the medical system -- places where meaning, ritual, and insights can flourish without turning everything into a product.
